By shaping outdoor spaces with landscapes, thoroughfares, and structures, a walking village emerged offering a variety of experiences supported by a shared cultural identity for the plan of Huawei’s technology research campus. The campus includes over 400,000 SM of buildings (90% of the area dedicated to laboratory space) on a long bend in the Suzhou River. Leading the design team for the competition entry, we created a campus plan described by diagrams, analysis, narratives, spreadsheets, and vignettes. Although our architecture practice was not awarded this commission, a relationship with Huawei was initiated.
