Azabudai Hills

Tokyo, Japan

Pelli Clarke & Partners

Rising to 330m the Mori JP Tower is currently the tallest building in Japan. It is the centerpiece of a mixed-use development in the Tokyo neighborhood of Azabudai Hills featuring office space on the lower levels and luxury residential units with expansive views on the upper levels.

The design process transformed the stout geometry of this building into a culturally expressive, slender form through a few, nuanced, sculptural moves.

Illustrations and renderings from the competition phase.

During my role as design team leader through the competition phase, I worked closely with Cesar Pelli and Fred Clarke to develop an architectural form that aligns with the goals and mission of the client. I developed several iterations of the tower using Rhino (3D modeling software) and 3D printing to create physical models. The refined shape of the tower achieves a slender appearance with classical architecture language – symmetry, entasis, and an organic crown.
